CHIMO Crisis Service

Chimo Crisis Services offers community services, counselling, support groups, parent education, and community education to people from different cultural backgrounds, ages groups, family lifestyles, and economic situations. Community services include a transition house, a 24 hour crisis line (604-279-7070), outreach and advocacy services, Newcomer's Centre, and pro-bono law clinics.

The Outreach & Advocacy Program provides information and referral services to immigrants, offers orientation on how to handle and resolve legal issues, helps with compiling applications and filling out forms, assists clients in their conflict resolution processes, and connects clients with professional legal advice/support. Advocates support clients through a dispute resolution process. Advocates may accompany individuals and family to government offices, legal appointments, community agencies or provincial court.

Pro Bono Law Clinics (coordinated by Access Pro Bono) offer low income individuals/families free legal advice on Residential Tenancy Law, Employment Standards, and Family Law. Chimo runs a first-stage transition house offering safe shelter and support to women fleeing family violence.

Individual and group Stopping the Violence Counselling is offered to women who have experienced family violence. Chimo offers the Children Who Witness Abuse (CWWA) Counselling Program, which offers art and play therapy to children aged 4-18 who have witnessed family violence.

Group counselling is offered through the Women's Support Group, held on an as-needed basis, and the Children's Art Support Group. Group presentations and individual sessions promoting an understanding of violence against women and children are also available, including various resources on Family Law published by the Ministry of Attorney General's Office, Legal Services Society (LSS), Justice Education Society, YWCA etc.
