Surrey Women's Centre Society
Surrey Women's Centre is a resource centre for women, children and men who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse and other forms of family violence. The Housing & Income Clinic helps victims access income assistance as well as safe and affordable housing. The Community-Based Victim Services Program is divided into 2 teams: Crisis Team and Court Team. Both teams provide risk assessment and safety planning, emotional support and practical assistance.
The Crisis Team works with victims who choose not to report to the police or cases where charges are not approved and, therefore, not proceeding to trial. The team liaises with local service providers to ensure that the victim has access to food, shelter, income assistance and other community resources. The Court Team works with victims where charges have been approved and the case is proceeding to trial. The team assists victims navigate the criminal justice system by liaising with the police and Crown Counsel, offering court preparation and accompaniment, providing court updates and information about victim impact statements as well as post-sentencing proceedings.
The Sexual Assault Response Team accompanies victims to the hospital and provides information about their medical and legal options. The Family Law Clinic offers free legal information to victims who are ineligible for legal aid and cannot afford a lawyer. Surrey Women's Centre also provides individual and group counselling, free clothes and small household items as well as a community kitchen for women living in poverty or fleeing domestic violence.
