Helping Spirit Lodge Transition House
The Helping Spirit Lodge Society operates the Spirit Lodge Transition House. This is a 33-bed, first-stage transition house primarily for Aboriginal women and children who have experienced family violence. Housing is provided for a maximum of 30 days. The house is staffed by Aboriginal personnel and operates along traditional Aboriginal lines. It provides support, education, referrals to community resources, and follow-up care services. Outreach services are also provided where substantial support to women is given after women and children leave their services, including but not limited to advocacy, referrals and legal matters. The primary task is to provide sanctuary in an alcohol and drug free environment. Through activities which are culturally relevant to the victim, the healing process can then begin. The program will provide a framework within which practical life skills training occurs - skills related to health management, home management, relationships, vocational training, goal setting and parenting skills.
